PCMCIA 4 Port USB Adaptor
Windows 2000 Revised Installation Procedure
Some users have reported problems installing the adaptor on Windows 2000 and I have to admit that the instructions leave a lot to the imagination! I have taken this up with the supplier but in the meantime here are revised instructions. They should also work for Windows XP
Please note this procedure assumes that your CD ROM is set to D. If it is not you should substitute any reference to D: with the letter of your CD ROM ie. E: or F: etc
Insert the card into the PCMCIA slot on your laptop
You should get the ‘found new hardware dialog’ - Click 'next' to continue
At the ‘What do you want to do?’ dialog please make sure 'search' is selected and clicked ‘next' again
In the ‘Optional search location’ dialog. Make sure 'Check CDROM' is selected, then click 'next'
Your laptop should spend 2 mins scanning the CD
You should see the message 'Windows found New driver' D:\USB 2.0 CARD\NEC\UPD720101\OUSB2.INF
Click ‘next’ to start the install
Your laptop should now install the driver which takes about one minute.
That’s it!
If for some reason the above procedure doesn’t work for you then another thing you could try is removing the card then running the following file from the CD
D:\USB 2.0 CARD\NEC\UPD720101\SETUP
This is an automated install for the driver files. Once complete insert the card and it should automatically install the required files for you.
If you are still having problems please contact us for a specific response to your situation
Driver installed OK but no USB devices are recognized when attached
The most likely cause of devices not being recognized is because there are quite a few laptops that have unpowered PCMCIA slots. Please connect the supplied USB power cable to one of your built in ports to provide additional power to the adaptor.
No USB to attach the power cable
If you need to attach the power cable but you don’t have an available port (or it is broken) then you can use a PS2 to USB adaptor like the one pictured to get power from the PS2 port instead of the USB. If you don’t have one of these then they can be bought fairly cheaply from most computer shops. If you get stuck then please contact us.
Connected devices only operate at 12MBps
The in built Windows drivers for some laptops don’t allow the USB ports to operate at high speed. The solution for this is to install the ‘official’ NEC drivers as detailed at the top of the page.
